Defense

I stand 100% behind our troops. I have supported Defense funding every year since coming to Congress, and proudly supported both Defense bills in the 106th Congress. All those who serve deserve our appreciation, our respect, and our compassion. The brave men and women in uniform who volunteered to defend our country are in my thoughts and in my prayers. I pledge to work to ensure that they have all the resources necessary to help them accomplish their mission quickly and safely so that they can return home to their families.

I want to salute the U.S. troops that have been killed while serving in Iraq. Our Nation is humbled by their allegiance, service and sacrifice. I pray that their families will find comfort and peace. Many U.S. troops have been physically wounded. I wish them a speedy recovery and happiness as they return to their family and friends. An untold number of troops will not bear physical scars from this war, but will struggle with their time in Iraq when they return home. I pledge that I will not forget their service and will stand with them when they come home to America.

I am a strong supporter of national defense. I understand the relationship between national security and the inherent freedom Floridians have been able to appreciate and enjoy.
The tragedy of September 11, 2001, left an indelible mark in history. The fabric of democracy was been violated and the American way of life changed forever. I believe that national security has never been more relevant for the citizens of Florida and the United States. The military has been called upon to respond to these challenges and as the nation prepares to rebuild the military's infrastructure, and my support of the military and homeland security in Congress has been steadfast.

Florida is the home to twenty-one military bases and three military unified commands. Florida’s military and defense-related industries are critical to the state’s economy. The $30 billion industry is the state’s 3rd top economic sector behind tourism and agriculture, and employs hundreds of thousands Floridians.

During the 108th Congress, I have cosponsored legislation that would benefit and express support for members of America’s Armed Forces. I cosponsored various pieces of legislation, that would: allow for full military retirement pay and disability compensation, pay for postage on packages sent to servicemembers involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom, exclude from gross income certain death gratuity payments to members of the uniformed services, and increase the minimum Survivor Benefit Plan basic annuity for surviving spouses age 62 and older.
